All about criminology

The key concepts  During a period of extensive change and expansion in British higher education the growth of university-level programmes in criminology has been a notable feature. From London to Lothian, Salford to Swansea and Birmingham to Belfast there is hardly a higher education institution that does not now offer a degree programme in criminology and criminal justice. This picture was very different less than one generation ago. In the very recent past undergraduate degrees in criminology were confined to one or two universities, alongside a small handful of institutions offering crime-focused postgraduate degrees. The social scientific study of crime was dispersed across disciplines such as sociology, social policy, social work, psychology, and law. Students would be offered occasional modules on ‘the sociology of crime’, ‘criminal justice policy’, or ‘social work with offenders’ as part of degree programmes whose primary mission was to impart a wideranging, discipline-base...

what is a criminologist?  As a criminologist, you conduct research to determine what causes individuals to commit crimes and the effects those illegal activities have on the perpetrators, victims and society. You will use the results of your research to formulate theories about crime prevention and proper methods of criminal rehabilitation. This field is interdisciplinary, combining criminal justice, sociology and psychology to develop an understanding of human behavior and to use that knowledge to analyze, predict and prevent conditions leading to criminal acts.   What type of education do you need? People interested in becoming criminologists usually pursue a minimum of a master's degree in the field. You could start with a baccalaureate degree in criminology, psychology or sociology. Criminologists also need to understand laws and law enforcement procedures, so you may take criminal justice courses, as well. Many programs incorporate internships to provide related work expe...

Law and Criminology

Image
  1. Law Law is a set of rules that are created and are enforceable by social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior, with its precise definition a matter of longstanding debate. It has been variously described as a science   and as the art of justice. Without law and legal actions criminology wouldn't stand as something you need to learn. 2. What is Criminology? Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals, including the motivations and consequences of crime and its perpetrators, as well as preventative measures.  Studying criminology can be seen as multi-disciplinary, as it contains elements of psychology, biology, statistics, law, and sociology. Criminology deals with both theoretical and practical work, seeking to understand and tackle crime and criminals, as well as the legal and criminal justice system, and its wider social ramifications.
